Flood situation improving


CALCUTTA, OCT. 2. Barring parts of North 24 Parganas and Nadia districts, the overall flood situation in West Bengal improved today even as the toll in the disaster crossed the 1,000 mark.

Official sources, confirming 906 deaths, said nearly 100 people were still missing and feared to have been washed away. The sources said Murshidazbad alone accounted for 496 deaths, followed by Birbhum (228), Nadia (76), Bardhaman (51), Hooghly (25), Midnapore (13), Bankura (8), North 24 Parganas (4), Howrah (3) and North Dinajpur (2). In Murshidabad, 142 people died in Kandi itself.

The sources said the situation remained grim in Bongaon, Gaighata, Gopalnagar, Swaroopnagar in North 24 Parganas district and Krishnaganj, Tehatta and Hanskhali in Nadia district. A report from Bongaon, however, said the toll in North 24 Parganas crossed the 100 mark as the situation there and in Basirhat sub- division worsened.
