TMC, Cong(I) plan protest against fuel price hike

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI, OCT. 2. Protesting the `steep hike' in fuel prices by the BJP-led government and the DMK's `justification' of the upward revision, the TMC would conduct a signature campaign in all the Assembly constituencies while the State Congress (I) would stage a demonstration before the district collectorates on October 11.

The TMC president, Mr. G. K. Moopanar, in a statement today, said the party would convey the public outcry against the hike in prices of petrol, cooking gas and diesel, through a signature campaign at busy public places in all the 234 Assembly constituencies in the State, on either October 4 or 5. A memorandum carrying the signatures of the public would be handed over to the Tamil Nadu Governor, Ms. Fathima Beevi.

Announcing the State Congress (I)'s stir plan against the `drastic rise' in fuel prices, the TNCC (I) president, Mr. E. V. K. S. Elangovan said he would lead the agitation in Madurai.

`When the Telugu Desam and the Trinamul Congress have openly condemned the hike, the DMK president and Chief Minister Mr. M. Karunanidhi's justification of the hike, is deplorable,' Mr. Elangovan told the media here.

Stating that it was the third such steep revision of fuel prices by the BJP-led regime, he said, it would badly hit the poor and the middle class. The rise in oil pool deficit cannot be an excuse for raising the prices of the fuel, he added.

Mr. Elangovan said all political parties which had `concern for public good' would be invited to take part in the protest demonstration, in which the `deterioration' of the law and order situation in Tamil Nadu would also be highlighted.
