Land allotted to Malleswari
By Our Special Correspondent
VISAKHAPATNAM, OCT. 2. The district administration has expressed
willingness to provide an alternate site to Karanam Malleswari,
the Olympic bronze medal winner, who has been allotted 700 sq.
yds. of land worth Rs. 35 lakhs free of cost in the posh Daspalla
Hills in Waltair ward in the city by the Government.
According to Mr. J.S.V. Prasad, District Collector, Malleswari
was originally allotted 403 sq. yds. in China Waltair in July,
1995 on payment of nominal market value at Rs.10 per sq. yds. At
the time of issue of house patta, there was no legal impediment
or any dispute or encroachment on the site allotted to her.
But after handing over possession to her, litigation was started
by three individuals who filed cases in court separately. At
present, the land was in occupation of Malleswari by erecting a
shed and the court litigations were pending disposal.
As the site earlier allotted was under litigation, a house-site
of 500 sq. yds. in Waltair ward was given to her in May last
year. When the allotted land was proposed to be handed over to
Malleswari, her mother, Mrs. K. Syamala, requested allotment of
an additional 200 sq. yds. to compensate the amount spent on the
old site in China Waltair.
"Accordingly, proposals were sent and the Government in G.O. Ms.
No. 654 Rev (Assignments-I) Department dated September 22 this
year, has allotted 700 sq.yds. in Waltair ward to Karanam
Malleswari free of cost. This was issued after her mother gave
written consent', the Collector revealed.
However, Mrs. Syamala represented to the Chief Minister, Mr. N.
Chandrababu Naidu, during the latter's visit to the city on
Friday for allotment of 1,000 sq. yds. near Joint Collector's
bungalow so that she could develop a gymnasium for giving
training and to develop weightlifters like her daughter. But this
land, acquired by the Visakhapatnam Urban Development Authority
(VUDA) was later sold to the Indian Oil Corporation.
"There is a writ petition pending in the High Court between the
VUDA and the person claiming ownership of the land. Hence the
administration has difficulty in considering this proposal. The
700 sq. yds. allotted to Karanam Malleswari is located in
Daspalla Hills which is a prime locality and worth about Rs. 35
lakhs. The administration is willing to look at any other option
that is suitable to Ms. Malleswari and legally/technically
feasible to the administration", Mr. Prasad said. If any request
was received from the champion regarding allotment of any other
suitable Government land, it would be examined and the proposal
would be sent to the Government, he added.
