Nation pays homage to Gandhi
NEW DELHI, OCT. 2. The nation today fondly remembered the Father
of the Nation on his 131st birth anniversary with leaders saying
that the Gandhian philosophy was relevant even after more than 50
years of Independence.
The President, Mr. K. R. Narayanan, the Vice-President, Mr.
Krishan Kant, the Prime Minister, Mr. Atal Behari Vajpayee, and
other leaders paid floral tributes to the Mahatma at his samadhi
in Rajghat. Mr. Vajpayee stood in silence with folded hands for
some time as the representatives of different religions offered
prayers.
The well-known classical vocalist, Mr. Madhup Mudgal, sang
Gandhi's favourite bhajans, including `Vaishnava Janato' and `Ram
Dhun.'
The leaders also offered floral tributes to the former Prime
Minister, Lal Bahadur Shastri, who gave the nation the slogan
`Jai Jawan-Jai Kisan', at his Vijay Ghat Samadhi on his 96th
birth anniversary.
Besides the President, the Vice-President and the Prime Minister,
the Opposition leader, Mrs. Sonia Gandhi, the former Prime
Minister, Mr. V. P. Singh, Home Minister, Mr. L. K. Advani, the
Delhi Chief Minister, Mrs. Sheila Dikshit, Congress leaders, Mr.
