Action plan to curb mosquito menace

PONDICHERRY, SEPT. 28. Ms. N. Sumathi, Deputy Director of Local
Administration Department (LAD), said here on Wednesday that the
committee constituted by the Administration under the
chairmanship of the Secretary to LAD, met here at the instance of
the Chief Secretary, Mr. T. T. Joseph, to evolve an action plan
to combat the mosquito menace.
It was resolved that with a view to mobilising cooperation of the
people to create a ``mosquito-free Pondicherry'' the services of
the members of the National Service Scheme (NSS) and National
Cadet Corps and also students to be utilised who would form a
committee to have interaction with the people.
Ms. Sumathi said electronic and print media would be fully used
to spread the message among the people and distribution of
pamphlets to build awareness.
There would be enumeration of damaged sceptic tanks, closing of
the vent pipes, prevention of water stagnation inside and in the
vicinity of the residential areas,draining out the water stored
in overheadtanks once in a week and refilling it after a
reasonable period of time.The PWD and LAD would jointly undertake
measures to ensure that there was proper maintenance of the
overhead tanks under their controls.The LAD would levy a charge
on the plot owners and people would be advised to keep in
separate baskets the plastic cups and other plastic materials so
that they could be disposed separately.
