113 killed in Sri Lanka

COLOMBO, SEPT. 28. Eighty LTTE rebels and 33 Sri Lankan troops were killed in heavy fighting since Wednesday over the control of a number of areas in the northern Jaffna peninsula.

The Army said it repulsed the LTTE's counter-attacks to regain control of the newly-captured areas, while the Tamil militants claimed to have taken hold of three km territory in the Jaffna peninsula.

An official release said today that the troops frustrated concerted attempts by Tamil guerrillas to regain control of the areas in Eluthumadduval-Killali sector, about 13 km south of Chavakachecheri town, captured two weeks ago by the troops.
