PM invites Basu for talks
NEW DELHI, SEPT. 28. The Prime Minister, Mr. A.B. Vajpayee, has
invited the West Bengal Chief Minister, Mr. Jyoti Basu, for
discussions on the law and order situation in the State on
September 30. This was stated today by the Forward Bloc leader,
Mr. Debabrata Biswas, a member of a Left Front delegation which
met the Prime Minister here. Mr. Biswas told PTI that Mr.
Vajpayee was concerned over the violence in the State and wanted
to hold a detailed discussion on the matter with Mr. Basu.
He said the delegation told Mr. Vajpayee that it was wrong to say
there was complete breakdown of law and order in the State as
reports of ``some violence'' had come from only seven of the 357
police stations. Mr. Vajpayee would also discuss with Mr. Basu
the flood situation in West Bengal. The delegation briefed the
Prime Minister of the havoc caused by the flood and sought
Central assistance to deal with the situation.
