'Govt. trying to communalise AMU violence'

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI, SEPT. 23. The Samajwadi Party today charged the Bharatiya Janata Party-led Government in U. P. with trying to ``communalise'' situation in Aligarh Muslim University(AMU) and spreading fear among minorities in the State.

Reacting to recent incidents of violence in the university and subsequent police action, the party General Secretary and spokesman, Mr. Amar Singh, said the minorities were feeling insecure in AMU.

He said that the SP always advocated that the country should take firm steps against the ISI and wipe out terrorist training camps across the border. He said, it was ``shameful'' to trouble minorities and link the students with the ISI.

Referring to the action against the Students Islamic Movement of India(SIMI), he criticised the `duplicity' of the BJP that while the party was `tolerant' towards the activities of the Bajrang Dal, it was taking action against the SIMI.

Turning to situation in West Bengal and talk of imposition of President's Rule there, Mr. Amar Singh said the Samajwadi Party would launch a nationwide agitation if the Centre tried to disturb the elected Government.

The party would not remain a silent spectator and promised to rally behind the CPI(M), especially if elected governments were troubled for political reasons, he said.

He sought to know why the NDA allies such as the Telugu Desam and the Shiromani Akali Dal were silent on the issue since both parties were against the use of Article 356.

On the political front, the SP has no alliance with the Rashtriya Kranti Party of the former U. P. Chief Minister, Mr. Kalyan Singh, and said the denial of U. P. BJP Chief, Mr. Kalraj Mishra, notwithstanding, the party had a tacit understanding with the Bahujan Samaj Party there.
