Respect human rights, Sonia tells partymen
By Our Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI SEPT 23. The Congress(I) President, Mrs. Sonia Gandhi,
today called on her partymen to behave at all levels in
consonance with the Universal Declaration of Human rights .
Admitting that human rights violations were rampant , she said
and there was little general awareness of the rights leading to
the rights `` becoming the preserve of the privileged few''.
Inaugurating a two day national convention organized by the
AICC's human rights department, she said the `` general mass of
the people were inadequately informed and therefore not
sufficiently protected''.
Urging the department to take it upon itself to spread awareness,
she said it was important for the party to create an awareness
among the people to create an environment conducive to the growth
of a society in which human rights violations could be
terminated.
Lauding her party for being the first of its kind in the world to
establish a human rights department, she directed the it to reach
out to the remotest villages in order to spread awareness which
according to her was the main objective of setting up such a
department in the party.
The Congress president also lauded India's unblemished human
rights record and said that it was the duty and responsibility of
every individual and society to protect human rights.
She however lamented the fact that there was a huge gap between `
our intentions and practice' which led to human rights
violations.
