NHRC notice to Ministry on Shivkumari murder
NEW DELHI, SEPT. 2. Taking suo motu cognisance of the reports on
the alleged killing of a Kargil widow by her in-laws for
compensation amount in Sultanpur district, the NHRC has issued
notices to the Ministry of Defence and the Uttar Pradesh police.
Commission sources said that taking serious view of the report of
murder of 19-year-old Shivkumari Devi on August 7 by goons
allegedly hired by her father-in-law, the Commission has issued
notice to the Defence Secretary and the Uttar Pradesh Director-
General of Police directing them to produce a report on the
incident before September 10.
Shivkumari, widow of Kargil martyr Ram Nihore Yadav, was killed
when she was returning home with her brother and mother after
collecting her husband's pension. Sultanpur police is
investigating the matter and no arrests have been made so far.
Shivkumari was living with her parents after her father-in-law
had filed a case claiming the compensation amount of Rs. 17 lakhs
received by her from the State Government and the Ministry of
Defence. Her father-in-law wanted the money to be kept in a joint
account. He later moved the court claiming that Shivkumari was
not his daughter-in-law and so the compensation be given to him.
Shivkumari's family had earlier demanded police protection as her
in-laws had filed a case, but the police had not heeded their
request resulting in the killing.
