Blood donor held for murder

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, AUG. 29.

A professional blood donor has been arrested by the South Delhi police in connection with the murder of a vagabond, who was found dead on the central verge of Sewa Nagar flyover in front of Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium on the intervening night of August 19 and 20.

The police said the deceased, identified as Saleem, was found lying in a pool of blood and with deep injury marks on his torso and forehead. Since he was a smack addict, all drug addicts living in the Sai Baba Mandir, Lodhi Colony, Kotla Mubarakpur and Nizamuddin areas were questioned.

By corroborating different facts and piecing the information together, the police claimed they were able to find that Saleem had an altercation with the accused, Sanjay, a few days ago. Sanjay was located in the Nizamuddin area and during interrogation, he allegedly confessed to having murdered Saleem with the help of his associates, Suneel and Guddu.

The deceased, it was revealed, had beaten Sanjay a few days ago and the latter wanted to avenge the insult. On the fateful night, Sanjay and his associates found Saleem sleeping on the flyover and went and lay close to him. Later, the culprits got up and repeatedly hit the victim on the head with a large stone -- which has since been recovered.

The police said Sanjay, who hailed from Nepal but had been residing in Delhi for nine years, was a professional donor and earned between Rs 250 and Rs 500 per month by donating blood in Delhi and Ghaziabad.

The police are now searching for the other accused, who are learnt to have fled to Hardwar.

An inter-state gang of auto-lifters, which specialised in theft of Maruti cars and ultimately sold them off in Nagaland, has been detected by the Anti-Auto Theft Squad of West Delhi police with the arrest of four persons.

The arrested persons have been identified as gang leader, Mehtaab (35), resident of B-50 Mansa Ram Park, Uttam Nagar; Mahavir (22) of Sonepat, Haryana; Sukhbir (32) of Bahadurgarh, Haryana; and Rakesh (24) of Kanjhawala.

The police said on receipt of information that illicit liquor was being supplied in stolen vehicles in Uttam Nagar, a team was stationed at Fish Market on Najafgarh Road.

The team noticed a white Tata Sumo with four persons in it. However, on being signaled to stop, the occupants tried to get away, they were chased and nabbed. Their interrogation revealed that the Tata Sumo had been stolen from Gurgaon by a person called Bhagwan Dass and was bought from him by Mehtaab.

The four also allegedly confessed to their involvement in several cases of auto-lifting in Janakpuri, Vikaspuri, Punjabi Bagh and Patel Nagar. They used to assemble at Rakesh's hotel and service station in Ghewra village and used to finalise their deals at the place.

The stolen vehicles were then disposed off by Mehtaab in Nagaland. Since he ran a transport company in Nagaland, Mehtaab was also able to make forged papers of the vehicles for facilitating their transfer.

While the gang was involved in at least 26 cases of auto-theft, the police have so far been able to recover five vehicles which include the Tata Sumo, two motorcycles, one Maruti car and one Hyundai Santro.

Two young men were nabbed by the public and the Dilshad Garden police soon after they snatched the gold chain of a woman in the Nand Nagri area of North East Delhi last evening.

The police said the culprits had snatched the gold chain of Ms M. Thomas (41), a resident of G.T.B. Enclave, while she was returning home from a vegetable market.

As the woman raised an alarm and alerted the passersby, one of the accused, Iqbal (22), a resident of Sunder Nagari, was nabbed by the public. His associate, Qadim (20) of Nand Nagari, was subsequently arrested by the Dilshad Garden police and the chain recovered.
