Concern over boycott of courts by advocates

By Our Special Correspondent

COIMBATORE, AUG. 29. The Coimbatore Consumer Cause has expressed concern over ``frequent boycott'' of courts by advocates.

In a resolution passed at its annual general meeting here recently, it pleaded that the Government should take all possible efforts for speedy disposal of cases in various courts.

According to a press release from Mr. K. Kathirmathiyon, secretary, the association also urged the Central Government to establish a circuit bench of the Madras High Court at Coimbatore at the earliest.

It requested the State Government to initiate action against those who ran ``unapproved courses and colleges'' instead of cautioning public against joining such courses or institutions.

Besides, approval for starting new colleges should be given only after ensuring that basic facilities were provided by the managements.

``We note with concern many colleges are functioning without the basic facilities''.

The counselling for professional courses should be conducted at district level, it pleaded.

It also urged the Central Government to amend the Consumer Protection Act to make it ``more effective and consumer friendly''.

Other demands include installing of electronic meters in autorickshaws and collection of only metered fare, and printing of ``ex-factory price'' on all packed commodities along with the ``maximum retail price''.

The association commended the TNEB for successfully implementing the ``one day service connection'' scheme for domestic consumers.
