HAZARIBAGH (Bihar), AUG. 29. Five people were killed and 13
others, including six CRPF men and a DSP, injured when the police
fired to disperse villagers who attacked policemen near Chaupran
police station in Hazaribagh district today, officials said.
The State Home Commissioner, Mr. U. N. Panjiar, told PTI that
villagers had blocked Grand Trunk Road near Berai this morning
demanding immediate arrest of those involved in alleged rape and
murder of a woman of Bela village on August 25.
According to the DGP, Mr. K. A. Jacob, the demonstrators burnt
two police vehicles and injured six CRPF men and a DSP when they
clashed with the security men. They also snatched a self-loading
rifle from a jawan during the attack.
As the crowd swelled, the demonstrators went on the rampage and
started pelting stones at the policemen when they tried to resist
by lathicharging and teargas shelling, he said.
When the situation became uncontrollable, the police fired in
which four persons were killed on the spot, while another
succumbed to injuries on way to hospital, Mr. Panjiar said.
The injured were rushed to the Ranchi Medical College Hospital
and Sadar Hospital here where their condition was stated to be
