DMK leader's poser to Govt.
By Our Staff Reporter
PONDICHERRY, AUG. 26. The Leader of the Opposition, Mr. R.V.
Janakiraman, told newspersons here on Friday that the
Congress(I)-TMC coalition Ministry should explain to the people
as to whether proper clearance was obtained before permitting the
dumping of molasses in the old port here for transshipment to
mother ship.
Mr. Janakiraman said a particular company was allowed to dump
molasses in a sump in the old port for transshipment without
obtaining permission from the Pollution Control Board.
The Government-owned distillery, which was functioning for nearly
75 years on the northern side of the beach road, was closed down
following a Supreme court order, to prevent pollution of beach
front.
He wondered how dumping could be permitted on the beach line, now
on the southern side.
The Congress(I)-led Government had failed to take care of the
freedom-fighters, senior citizens, by not increasing the pension
paid to them.
The increased pension has not been available for a few months to
the elderly.
