Notice to Govt. on polio funds 'misappropriation'
By Our Correspondent
BANGALORE, AUG. 26. The Acting Chief Justice, Mr. Ashok Bhan and
Mr. Justice R.Gururajan, constituting a Division Bench in the
Karnataka High Court, ordered issue of notice on Friday to the
State of Karnataka and other respondents in a public interest
writ petition filed by the Akhila Karnataka Praja Parishat of
Bangalore in which a direction had been sought for an enquiry by
the CoD or CBI into the misappropriation of funds relating to
polio and UNICEF funds.
The petitioners said they were affected by the inaction of the
authorities concerned in not recovering misappropriated sums to
the extent of Rs. one crore.
According to the petitioner, the audited report has been
furnished to the State authorities regarding the misuse of polio
and UNICEF funds by Dr. G.V.Nagaraj. An article had appeared in a
daily wherein it was stated that "Rs. 40 lakhs had gone down the
drain." Articles on this had also appeared in other publications
regarding a CoD probe into the "Reproduction of child and health
project," the petitioner said.
The petitioner submitted that the respondents had failed to take
steps to check such misappropriation. The petitioner also arrayed
the Minister of Health and Family Welfare as a respondent in the
petition.
The judges adjourned further hearing of the petition.
