Call for solidarity among Christians
By Our Staff Reporter
MADURAI, AUG. 26. Various social problems that confront the
Christians in the country today can be tackled more effectively
if the ambitious objective of realising solidarity amidst
Christians, could be realised,'' said the Most. Rev. Dr. M.
Arockiaswamy, the Archbishop of Madurai.
Presiding over the inauguration of the two-day Ecumenical
Conference-2000 (Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry), here today, the
Archbishop, who is also the president of the Ecumenical Assembly,
said policy-makers would heed Christians only when unity is
forged amidst its various sects. ``Without solidarity, no issue,
that is facing the community, can be solved,'' he said.
Tracing the divisions among Christians to the 11th century, the
Archbishop said the fragmentalisation of the community would
affect its overall interest in a situation where Christians were
targeted. ``The division among the Christians has led to the
formation of nearly 900 units, though the basic principle of
Christianity remain the same,'' he said.
