Bodo leaders provided security cover

By Our Special Correspondent

GUWAHATI, AUG. 23. With violence erupting again, fear and panic have gripped the people in the Bodo areas. Most Bodo leaders are now living under police protection - legislators are in the MLA hostel here and others in Circuit Houses in the towns.

Dispur has instructed all district Superintendents of Police to provide security cover to all the Bodo leaders who do not have personal security officers (PSOs).

Accordingly, Bodo Sahitya Sabha general secretary, Mr. Gopinath Borgiary, ABSU general secretary, Mr. Nathuram Boro, and the Chief Convener of the Bodo People's Action Committee (BPAC), Mr. Reoreoa Narziary, were provided armed guards at Kokrajhar today.

NDFB hitmen are alleged to be behind the two murders in the past few days. First came the killing of Bodo Sahitya Sabha president, Mr. Bineswar Brahma, at Guwahati on Saturday. Then the PDF MLA, Mr. Mohini Basumatary, was murdered at Bijni on Monday. The Government has ordered magisterial inquiries in both cases.

In two other incidents, five woodcutters, all immigrant Muslims, were shot dead by the NDFB in Dhubri district on Monday and a former AASU leader was gunned down by the BLT near Barpeta on Sunday night.

Talking to The Hindu over phone from Kokrajhar this afternoon, Mr. Bishiram Narjary, general secretary of the All Bodo Employees' Federation, said today that all Bodo Government employees were feeling insecure. Following the killing of the woodcutters, tension is prevailing in Dhubri district. There have been reports of Bodo passengers being dragged out of buses plying on NH 52 and beaten up.
