Parties grieve over untimely demise

CHENNAI, AUG. 23. The untimely demise of the Union Power
Minister, Mr. Rangarajan Kumaramangalam, causing an irreparable
loss to the BJP-led Government at the Centre and to the nation at
large was mourned by a host of political personalities and
parties today.
The former MP, Mr. Era Sezhiyan, said the country had lost a
dynamic politician and an able administrator. As student leader,
trade union activist and Union Minister, Mr. Kumaramangalam had
utilised every opportunity available to him to improve the lot of
the disadvantaged people without taking a partisan attitude, he
said in a message.
While the MGR Kazhagam president, Mr. Rm. Veerappan, grieved the
death of an active political leader at a young age, the CITU
State general secretary, Mr. T. K. Rangarajan, recalled Mr.
Kumaramangalam's contribution to public life since his student
days.
The former Minister, Mr. S. Kannappan, termed the death as a
`great loss' to the country.
The Puthiya Tamizhagam president, Dr. K. Krishnaswamy, expressing
pain at the passing away of Mr. Kumaramangalam, said the latter
symbolised civilised politics in the Indian political arena.
The Dalit Panthers of India organiser, Mr. R. Thirumavalavan,
expressing shock, said Mr. Kumaramangalam like his father had
ably served both Tamil Nadu and the country.
The State president of the Tamilnadu Nationalist Congress Party,
Mr. G. P. Sarathy, recalled Mr. Kumaramangalam's role in building
up the National Students Union of India in New Delhi, even
risking his life.
