Stop cruelty to cattle, Jackie Chan tells PM
By Our Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI, AUG. 23. Mr. Jackie Chan, Hong Kong-based star of
martial arts films has taken up the cause of cattle destined for
slaughter houses in India.
Responding to a request from the international animal advocacy
group, `People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals', he has
urged the Government to take immediate measures to halt the
cruelty meted to cattle which are killed for meat and leather
products.
In a letter to the Prime Minister, Mr. A.B.Vajpayee, copies of
which were released here today, Mr. Chan said ``I am greatly
saddened to learn of the pain and suffering endured by cattle
during their transport and slaughter. I am especially alarmed
that such abuses, while illegal under India's stringent animal
welfare laws, continue in this wonderful land where reverence for
life is a matter of national life''.
He appealed to the Prime Minister to ``ensure that federal, state
and municipal authorities treat these crimes as a matter of
priority and enforce the laws''.
