NEW DELHI, AUG. 23. Janmashtami, marking the birthday of Lord
Krishna, was celebrated across the capital with traditional
gaiety and enthusiasm.

security arrangements to prevent any untoward incident. `Jhankis'
(tableaus) depicting the life and times of the divine cowherd who
gave `Bhagvad Gita' (the song celestial) to mankind attracted the
young and old alike.
People, including senior citizens, women and children, dressed in
their festive best, made a beeline for temples.
the President, Mr. K.R. Narayanan, the Vice President, Mr.
Krishan Kant, and the Prime Minister, Mr. Atal Behari Vajpayee,
