Sangeetha sets National record

KANCHEEPURAM, AUG. 20. M. Sangeetha of Thiruvallur District set a new National record in the high jump event in the girls' under-16 category at the annual junior inter-district athletic meet, when she cleared the bar with a leap of 1.69 metres.

Sangeetha, a student of the SBOA Matriculation Higher Secondary School in Chennai, also bettered her previous best mark, which till today, stood at 1.65 metres. Another National record was set by Pooja Merita Jose of the same school, when she won the girls' under-16 shot put event with a throw of 10.95 metres.

Tiruchi won the overall shield in the boys' section by bagging 196 points, Chennai won the honours in the girls' section, by securing 328 points. K.N. Priya, who set new meet records in the girls' under-18 100 metres and 100 metres hurdles events, had a rich haul of medals as she went on to win the triple jump with a new meet record and the 200m events.

Girls under-14: Pentathlon: P. Lakshmi (Tirunelveli) 2421 points; R. Elavarasi (Thanjavur) 2280 pts; K. Saraswathi (Chennai) 2208 pts.

Boys under 16: 4X100 metres relay: Thanjavur 45.9sec; Tiruchi 46.0sec; Combined Sports Hostel 46.7sec.

Girls under 16: 4X100 metres relay: Coimbatore 53.7sec; Thiruvallur (54.8)sec; Dharmapuri 55.0sec. Pentathlon: M. Sangeetha (Thiruvallur) 2577 points; Revathi (Chennai) 2328 pts; G. Narmadha (Nagapattinam) 1973.

Girls under 18: Triple Jump: K.N. Priya (Chennai) 11.4 metres (new meet record); N. Surekha (Chennai) 10.89 mts; A. Vidya (Coimbatore) 10.87 mts. 200 metres: K.N. Priya (Chennai) 26.7 sec; K. Muthulakshmi (Madurai) 27.2 sec; D Keerthana (Thiruvannamalai) 28.0sec.

Girls under 20: Shot Put: G Subha (Coimbatore) 10.04 mts; S Anuradha (Chennai) 9.57 mts; A Saravani (Kancheepuram) 9.56 mts. High Jump: Hebzi Janet (Kanyakumari) 1.5 mts; Nooshan Rajendran (Chennai) 1.45 mts; S Anuradha (Chennai) 1.35mts. Long Jump: M Krishnapriya (Tiruchi) 5.19 mts;

Individual champions: Boys: K Sathish Kumar (Kancheepuram) under 16. M Prasanna (Chennai) under 18. Edwin Pushparaj (Kancheepuram) under 20.
