Simulator helps reduce training costs: Navigation centre officers

By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD, AUG. 11. The Navigation and Signals School at the Air Force Station, Begumpet, which is the only navigation training centre of the Indian Air Force in the country saves about Rs. 16 crores with the simulator developed by its officers.

This was revealed to the visiting newsmen at the station here on Friday. The simulator is a replica of `Avros', aircraft used by the IAF for transport purposes. Navigators and air signallers, who guide the pilots while flying, are trained on Avros.

According to the officers, the simulator has reduced the cost of training drastically. "Basically, the training needs a lot of practical work and it is quite expensive to provide all the training on the original aircraft. Now, the trainees can work for as much time as they want in simulators to get the feel of the aircraft", pointed out an officer in charge of training.

Interestingly, it is not just the IAF cadets who are trained here but a number of officers from neighbouring countries have also benefited from the expertise available here. Naval and Coast Guard cadets, too, are also trained here.

"We also encourage children who are keen to know and learn about the aircraft. They are taken inside the aircraft and made to interact with the pilots and engineers. This not only helps them learn about the aircraft but also enhances the image of the IAF", pointed out the chief engineer of the station.
