TNPCB efforts to check noise pollution
By Our Staff Reporter
CHENNAI, AUG. 11. The Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board(TNPCB),
conducted vehicular checks for prohibited types of air horns at
Koyambedu, Royapuram and Guindy.
The TNPCB chairperson, Ms. Sheela Rani Chunkath, who supervised
the check at Guindy said, officials stopped vehicles TNO1 C 2369,
TN28 B 1999 and TN02 A 7900 for using air horns which caused
noise pollution. Action was taken against the vehicles and
drivers were asked not to use air horns.
Over 200 vehicles were tested for emissions during the check up
in the three places in city. Fifty per cent of the vehicles were
found to exceed emission norms. Action was taken against heavy
vehicles for violating the emission norms under the Motor
Vehicles Act, 1988 and the Tamil Nadu Motor Vehicle Rules, 1989.
The drivers of two-wheelers and cars were let off with a warning
and were requested to bring down their emission levels to comply
with the norms set.
A TNPCB press release said that increased ambient noise levels in
public places through industrial activity, loud speakers, public
address systems, music systems, vehicular horns, generator sets,
construction activities and other mechanical devices affected
overall well-being.
