Car bomb kills 13 in Srinagar
At least 13 people, including a photo-
journalist, two Armymen and a civilian, were killed and over 30
injured in a powerful bomb blast in Srinagar today. The condition
of many of the injured, mostly security personnel, is stated to
be critical.
Blast executed at Pak's behest: PM
The Prime Minister, Mr. A.B. Vajpayee, said
tonight that the car bomb explosion in Srinagar was executed "at
the behest of Pakistan".
I am safe, says Rajkumar
As doubts continued to linger about the
emissary-journalist, Mr. R.R. Gopal, directly meeting the forest
brigand Veerappan yet, what brought cheer on the 12th day of the
kidnap episode was yet another recorded message from the Kannada
thespian, Mr. Rajkumar, that he was ``comfortable, happy and has
no problem at all''.
Hizbul's new condition not helpful: U.S.
In faulting the Hizbul Mujahideen for
insisting on a new condition - inclusion of Pakistan in the talks
- after the ceasefire and offer of dialogue was announced and
accepted by India, the Clinton administration has reminded New
Delhi that a solution to the Kashmir issue cannot come about
without direct discussions between India and Pakistan taking into
account the wishes of the Kashmiri people.
Door open for Hurriyat: Govt.
Notwithstanding the collapse of the dialogue
with the Hizbul Mujahideen, the Vajpayee government feels that
the ``peace process'' has acquired a certain momentum and that
the idiom of dialogue would continue to find favour with the
people and groups in Kashmir.
Clinton expresses consternation over Kashmir killings
The Pakistan Foreign Minister, Mr. Abdul
Sattar, disclosed here today that the U.S. President, Mr. Bill
Clinton, had written to the Chief Executive, Gen. Pervez
Musharraf, last week expressing his ``consternation'' over the
killings in Kashmir on August 1 and 2.
Sirimavo Bandaranaike resigns
The President, Ms. Chandrika Kumaratunga, today
appointed a hardline member of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP)
as the new Prime Minister in an attempt to placate sections of
the majority Sinhala-Buddhist community who are angry with her
for attempting to change the Constitution.
Women's Bill only after consensus: Govt.
The Government today virtually washed its
hands of the contentious Women's Reservation Bill leaving it to
the political parties to sort it out among themselves.
Pak. calls for 'impartial probe'
Pakistan tonight demanded an `impartial
investigation' into the bomb blast that rocked Srinagar in which
13 people were killed.
Union Government says no to Sahara Cup
The Union Government on Thursday announced
its decision not to clear the Indian team's participation in the
Sahara Cup at Toronto against Pakistan. The tournament was to be
held from September 9 to 17.
