Crowd goes 'tunak tunak' to Punjabi kudi
THE EVENING was never so pleasant and the mood never so perfect.
The chilly breeze blowing across the sprawling lawns further
fuelled the desire to make most of the beautiful evening.
The rain gods threatened to dampen the spirits for a while but
the dark clouds blew away as the spirited new sensation of
Indipop, Vibha Sharma, took on the buoyant gathering at the
Country Club.
What can one expect when a charged crowd filled to the brim is
egged on by a chirpy young beautiful girl to dance to her tunes?
For the entertainment-starved Hyderabadis, it worked like a wake-
up call from the deep slumber and the youngsters and young at
heart wiggled and jiggled with her resulting in rivulets of sweat
flowing from their bodies.
Starting with her runaway hit, `Mehndi lagaoon mein sajanake naam
ki,' and following it up with the melodious number, `Ishq hua',
the London-born girl discovered early that it's the rustic
Punjabi music that shakes the Hyderabadis and nothing else.
If some found the chairs inconvenient to exhibit their dancing
prowess, lots of excited youngsters jumped the fence that
separated them from the singer and jived their way to glory. This
was in response to the singer's constant yelling, `You wanna more
- common Hyderabad dance with me'.
However, there were a few moments when one thought the `Mehndi'
girl wouldn't satiate the Hyderabadi youth who yearn for the hard
beats than the soft music. But the show got enlivened as she
picked up a few numbers of her favourite singer, Asha Bhonsle.
And one couldn't help but shake a leg or two. A medley of
English, Hindi and Punjabi left the crowd wanting more.
Ironically, the show was quite short given the mood and
atmosphere that promised to make a great evening. But as always
(as usual!), the stars came late onto the stage and made an early
(as usual!) exit.
Though, Vibha fulfilled her promise to turn the evening into a
memorable one and vowed to be back with more masti, the crowd
were definitely disappointed with the short but sweet show.
