Seized boat brought back from Sri Lanka
By Our Staff Reporter
RAMANATHAPURAM, JULY 10. A damaged Indian fishing boat seized by
the Sri Lankan Navy on the charge of crossing the Indo-Sri Lankan
international border on February 2, was taken in tow from
Thalimannar by a 12-member team on Monday morning.
The Assistant Director for Fisheries, Rameswaram, Mr. Elango,
said eight fishermen were arrested and their two mechanised boats
seized while they were fishing near Kutch island. Seven fishermen
were released by the Sri Lankan Government, thanks to the efforts
taken by the State Government. One fisherman died in Sri Lanka
due to illness.
The Sri Lankan Government had given permission to release both
the boats. However, as the boats were stranded on a sand bank
near Thalimannar, only one could be brought back, said the
Assistant Director.
