CM presents Bell Labs scholarships

HYDERABAD, JULY 8. The Chief Minister, Mr. N.Chandrababu Naidu, on Saturday presented the Lucent Technologies India, Research and Development Bell Labs Scholarships to three students from the city. The students presented with the scholarships were Deepika Gunda of Gautami Junior College, Sreekanth Mukalla of Sri Chaitanya Junior Kalashala and Anuj Pradhan of Kendriya Vidyalaya, Picket.

The President and Managing Director of the Lucent Technologies, India, Mr. Krishna Tanuku, said the scholarship programmes for excellence in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and General Knowledge were initiated to raise awareness of innovation. Apart from promoting academic excellence, the programmes were aimed at generating awareness on career choices in telecommunication technologies among senior school and junior college students, he said.

The first phase of the programme was open only in Banglore, Chennai and Hyderabad for which eight students, including three from Hyderabad, were selected from among 655 students who competed for the scholarship. Each scholarship is worth Rs. 75,000 with the student receiving Rs. 25,000 and the school getting Rs. 50,000.

In his address, the Lucent Technologies representative, Mr. Dilip Mukherjee, said that Bell Labs had a research and development community of more than 26,000 people spread over 25 countries.

Delivering the keynote address, the Advisor to the State Government on Information Technology, Mr. T.H.Chowdary, said IT had developed into a tool with applications in every field, including medical, education and business. In terms of IT spending as a proportion of Gross Domestic Product percentage, India had become the 10th nation in the world in just four years, he said.
