21 hurt in Spanish bull run
PAMPLONA (SPAIN): Twenty-one people were on Saturday injured in
the second day of Pamplona's running of the bulls, the Spanish
festival in which the daring run alongside dangerous beasts
through narrow streets, officials said (Picture shows the crowd
trying to avoid being trampled by a bull let loose in Pamplona on
Saturday). A 40-year- old American man from Denver was gored in
the back and required surgery, and a 23-year-old Canadian who was
trampled suffered a head injury, requiring a trip to the
hospital, emergency workers said. Two others were taken to
hospital for lesser injuries, and the rest were treated on the
spot. The San Fermin festival runs every day from July 7 to 14
each year, drawing up to half a million tourists, hundreds of
whom participate in the running of the bulls. It was made famous
by Ernest Hemingway's novel ``The Sun Also Rises''. Officials
reported 41 injuries over the first two days. The last death was
in 1995, when a 22-year-old American was gored. Only five bulls
ran on Saturday instead of the usual six after a veterinarian
ruled one of the animals unfit.
