Samata party rejects autonomy resolution

VARANASI, JULY 8. The Samata party today unanimously ratified the January 28 election of Ms. Jaya Jaitley as party president.

The proposal to ratify Ms. Jaitley's election was moved by the general secretary, Mr. Gopal Pacharwal and seconded by another general secretary, Mr. Akhlaq Ahmad, Samata leader and former MP, Mr. Raj Kishore Mehta said.

The party rejected the autonomy resolution passed by the Jammu & Kashmir Assembly seeking pre-1953 automony status, but appreciated their desire for more powers to the States. In a political resolution, it asked the Jammu & Kashmir Government to identify, together with the Central Government, the areas where both could work to ensure peace and development in the State.''

The resolution also supported the Sri Lanka policy of the Vajpayee Government saying human rights of the Tamils should be safeguarded and equal constitutional rights ensured to every citizen.

The party president, Ms. Jaya Jaitley, the Agriculture Minister, Mr. Nitish Kumar and the Minister of State for Railways, Mr. Digvijay Singh attended the meeting.
