Congress DAC speeds up cases

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI JULY 8 The Disciplinary Action Committee (DAC) of the Congress has asked the State committees and the general secretaries in charge of the States to process expeditiously the cases pending before them, so that the DAC can take suitable action.

Talking to the press after a review meeting of the general secretaries and the DAC secretary, Mr. R.K. Dhawan, said that ``the general secretaries and the States have been asked to process the cases and give their recommendations to us''.

Held in the backdrop of developments in Gujarat and following a perceptible increase in the cases of indiscipline in the States, the outcome of the DAC belied the hype that it had generated. To its chagrin the five-member DAC comprising Mr. Vijay Bhaskar Reddy, chairman, Mr. Dhawan, Dr. Manmohan Singh, Mr. A.K. Antony and Mr. Ghulam Nabi Azad actually had little to act upon. In fact, according to Mr. Dhawan ``there were no cases pending before the committee'' therefore there was no occasion for them to take action.

The DAC apparently was handicapped by the inaction on the part of the general secretaries and the State units who were yet to recommend the cases pending before them and also pinpoint the specific charges of indiscipline. ``We have asked the general secretaries to come up with specific charges,'' said Mr. Dhawan.

His assertion however came as a surprise to many specially in view of the incidents in Gujarat where a section of the party had launched a virulent campaign against the former treasurer and CWC member, Mr. Ahmad Patel, and the PCC had already suspended four leaders of the Solanki group. Similarly in Tamil Nadu, the former TNCC chief, Mr. Tindivanam Ramamurthy, let off an outburst against the high command for removing him. Even in his reply to the show cause notice issued to him Mr. Ramamurthy has remained defiant but the general secretary is yet to forward the case to the DAC with his recommendations.
