Punjab to spend Rs. 37 cr. for genetic development of cattle

CHANDIGARH, JUNE 29. The Punjab Government plans to invest Rs. 37
crore to improve the genetic potential of cattle and make them
``disease free.''
Rs. 3.92 crore has been released by the State Government for the
project which is being sponsored by the Centre. The State Animal
Husbandry and Dairy Development Minister, Dr. Rattan Singh
Ajnala, announced the project after a review meeting of cattle
and animal welfare schemes sponsored by the Centre.
The genetic potential of buffaloes would improve to 100 per cent
from 5 per cent in the next six years due to these schemes. The
45 per cent genetic potential of the cows would improve to 100
per cent in the next three years, Dr. Ajnala said.
The National Bull Production and Extension of Frozen Semen
Technology was the most important among these schemes for which
the Union Government has allocated Rs 39.22 crore.
Rs. 154 lakh has been given to the Nabha farm where this scheme
was started.
The Centre has given Rs. 23.82 crore for genetic improvement of
cattle. Frozen semen banks would be augmented by importing good
quality bulls.
