Restoring autonomy only solution, says Farooq
The Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister, Dr.
Farooq Abdullah, today strongly opposed the division of the State
``on communal lines'' saying it would lead to national
disintegration. Pointing out that autonomy was the only solution
to the State's problems, he said it was not aimed at weakening
the country but was proposed only to strengthen State's relations
with the Union.
Scheme for recovery of SEB dues approved
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs
(CCEA) today approved a scheme for the recovery of outstanding
debts of State Electricity Boards (SEBs) to Central public sector
undertakings including the National Thermal Power Corporation
(NTPC) and Coal India Limited (CIL). The outstandings were over
Rs. 10,000 crores on December 31, 1999.
Azharuddin apologises for remarks
In what is obviously a belated reaction,
former Indian cricket captain, Mohammed Azharuddin, expressed
sincere apologies about his comment that he was being victimised
as he belonged to the minority community.
G-15 call to adopt U.N. pact on terrorism
Firmly rallying behind India, the tenth G-15
summit today called for an urgent adoption of the United Nations
convention against international terrorism and condemned its
perpetrators, and cautioned against forcing the pace of
globalisation on developing countries.
'RJD dividing people along caste lines'
A three-member fact finding committee of the
BJP, which returned after visiting Nawada and Aurangabad
districts in Bihar, has said the recent killings were not
manifestations of a caste war, but the result of encouragement of
criminal gangs by an ineffective administration.
Judicial probe into deaths of priest, cook
The Uttar Pradesh Government has ordered a
judicial inquiry into the killing of the Christian priest,
Brother George, in the St. Francis School campus at Nawada in
Mathura on June 6 and the death of his cook, Vijay Ekka, in
police custody on Saturday.
IT official suspended
The Additional Commissioner of Income Tax,
Mr. Vishwa Bandhu Gupta, whose disclosures on the deposits by
some Indian cricketers under the Voluntary Disclosure of Income
(VDIS) scheme had attracted media attention recently, has been
suspended from service with immediate effect.
New computer virus
A new computer virus has caused shutdowns of
the e-mail systems at some major U.S. companies. It does no harm
to computer files, but multiplies by sending itself out to
everyone listed in the infected computer's address book. An alert
has been sounded in Asian countries, including Hong Kong.
Sri Lanka devalues currency
Struggling under huge import bills due to the
ongoing war with the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam(LTTE), the
Sri Lankan government today announced that it was widening its
rupee-dollar trading band by 5 per cent from 2 per cent,
effectively depreciating its currency.
