Sonia urged to end Orissa PCC crisis

NEW DELHI, JUNE 17. The Leader of the Opposition in the Orissa Assembly, Mr. Ramakant Mishra, today met the Congress(I) president, Ms. Sonia Gandhi, and urged her to take steps to resolve the crisis in the Orissa PCC.

During his 30-minute meeting with the AICC chief, Mr. Mishra apprised her of the absence of half the party MLAs during the last Assembly Session, barring the last two days when they turned up at the behest of the AICC general secretary in charge of Orissa, Mr. Anil Sastri, for the Rajya Sabha elections.

Later briefing newspersons, Mr. Mishra told Ms. Gandhi about his apprehension that a sizeable section of the party MLAs ``might abstain'' from the June 25 CLP meeting, convened by him in Bhubaneswar. The budget session of the Orissa Assembly begins from June 28 and is expected to continue for six weeks. The warring groups of two former Chief Ministers - Mr. J.B. Patnaik and Mr. Hemanand Biswal - are fighting it out to capture the post of PCC chief. Mr. Sastri was present during the meeting.
