Ex-Army officer named Tripura Governor

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI, JUNE 17. Lieutenant-General (Retd) K. M. Seth, was today appointed Governor of Tripura. The appointment will take effect from the date he assumes charge of his office, according to a Rashtrapati Bhavan communique.

Lt.Gen. (Retd) Seth replaces Prof. Siddheshawar Prasad whose five-year term has come to an end. Earlier, the Union Home Ministry had recommended the name of Lt.Gen. (Retd) V. R. Raghavan for the post.

But, according to highly placed sources, Lt.Gen. (Retd) Raghavan expressed his inability to take up the gubernatorial assignment.

Mr. Seth recently retired as Adjutant-General. He has commanded the prestigious 21 Corps, the elite strike corps, with distinction. He had earlier been with the 17 Para Regiment and his peers described Lt.Gen. Seth as a ``good soldier and go- getter who seizes the initiative.''

The thinking in the Government has been to appoint a former Army General or a former officer of the Indian Police Service, who would be experienced in tackling terrorism and conversant with security apparatus and parameters of internal security, as Tripura Governor.
