Life-term for murder of widow

By Our Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, JUNE 13. The Second Additional Sessions Judge, Mr. Kamal Pasha, has sentenced Henry (42), a resident of Anaad village, to life imprisonment and a fine of Rs. 10,000 for the murder of a widow, Omana (35), on July 10, 1995.

Omana, a resident of Panavoor village, was a labourer and had two daughters. At the work place, she became friendly with Henry and the two started living together.

Henry, who had relations with other women, used to quarrel with Omana. The two fell out when Henry sold a half sovereign gold chain belonging to Omana's daughter without her permission.

According to the prosecution, Henry decided to do away with Omana and procured the deadly pesticide Furidan, for the purpose. Pretending to be repentant, he went to Omana's house on July 9, the day before the murder.

He had lunch at her house and when Omana went out of the house in the evening, he seized the chance to mix the pesticide in a bottle of Ayurvedic "kashayam" which Omana was consuming. Henry then left the house.

Omana, as usual, took the poisoned "kashayam" before going to bed that night and soon collapsed. She accused Henry in her dying statement.
