Man commits suicide, relatives stage dharna
By Our Staff Correspondent
MYSORE, JUNE 13. Tension prevailed for some time in front of
Jayalakshmipuram Police Station on Hunsur Road here on Tuesday,
when relatives of a person who allegedly committed suicide after
being insulted by a lecturer-couple, staged a dharna along with
the body.
The relatives numbering over 150 who gathered in front of the
police station in the morning were demanding compensation of Rs.2
lakhs to the family of the victim, Krishna (28), a milkman, who
allegedly committed suicide after being insulted by the lecturer-
couple for misbehaving with a woman.
They alleged that Dr. Kalachanne Gowda, Professor of Sociology in
the University Evening College, and his wife, Ms. Vanajakshi,
lecturer at the Women's Studies Centre on Manasa Gangotri, had
driven Krishna to commit suicide.
It is learnt that Krishna, who was grazing his cattle in a open
field at Vijayashreepura on Monday, misbehaved with a maid,
Thayamma, when she was said to be with a young boy. He later
dragged her to the couple's house to complain to them of her
behavior.
The protesters alleged that even before ascertaining the fact,
the couple, both of whom are active members of a voluntary group
fighting for women's right, threatened him of dire consequences
and lodged a complaint with police who detained him. Later,
Krishna who was released at the behest of his brother, went home
and unable to tolerate the insult hanged himself to death, they
alleged.
Further, the protesters alleged that Thayamma had demanded
Rs.50,000 from Krishna to withdraw the complaint. Meanwhile, Dr.
Kalachanne Gowda and Ms. Vanajakshi, who were arrested for
allegedly driving Krishna to death, were produced before a court.
