Moopanar must lead third front in T.N.: Swamy
By Our Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI, JUNE 13. The Janata Party president, Dr. Subramaniam
Swamy, has said that he would like the Tamil Maanila Congress
President, Mr. G. K. Moopanar, to head the third front to fight
the forthcoming Assembly elections in the State and become the
Chief Minister.
Addressing a news conference here, Dr. Swamy said the people of
Tamil Nadu were neither in favour of the Chief Minister, Mr.
Karunanidhi, nor the AIADMK general secretary, Ms. Jayalalitha.
``The people want a third alternative and Mr. Moopanar is best
suited to head the alternative''.
At the same time, Dr. Swamy said, the TMC chief appeared to be
hesitant to take the initiative towards formation of a third
front and was keen on support from the Congress.
The Congress could not be expected to support the initiative for
a new formation, given the vested interests of some of the
leaders in the party. Dr. Swamy hailed Mr. Moopanar's stand
against the LTTE.
According to Dr. Swamy, his party has accepted the invitation of
Mr. Laloo Prasad Yadav, to join the RJD as an alliance partner to
fight communal forces.
``It will be my endeavour to make this into a broader Janata
Front to challenge the BJP-led, RSS-controlled NDA. I have
already met Mr. Chandra Shekhar, Mr. I. K. Gujral, Mr. Mulayam
Singh Yadav and Mr. Ajit Singh,'' he said.
Later in the evening Dr. Swamy called on the President, Mr. K. R.
Narayanan, and apprised him by a letter of the `gross and
reckless disregard' for the Supreme Court stay on Governors
giving sanction for prosecution of the Chief Ministers in the
context of the recent developments in Bihar.
