Corpn. sends notices for changes in electoral rolls
Rohwathi Varghese
CHENNAI, JUNE 6. The Chennai Corporation, through the Office of
the Electoral Registration Officer, has sent out around 40,000
notices to individuals regarding transposition, inclusion and
deletion of names from the electoral rolls.
Letters intimating the public on deletion of names from the list
were being sent out as officials had seen two entries pertaining
to the same individual during the process of verification.
Officials have advised the public not to panic when they receive
such notices. Instead, they suggest that the person should check
with the zonal office concerned where a copy of the constituency-
wise list of the electorate will be displayed.
However, members of the public are complaining that though
notices require that the individual make a personal appearance at
the zonal office to voice any objection, officials are ill-
informed and ignorant about the process. Officials attribute this
``possible indifference'' to the multiple pressures of taking up
change of door numbers, census operations and property tax
collection nearly simultaneously.
Officials also said that people who have not enrolled yet can
take advantage of the online-videography process which will be
initiated soon for all 14 constituencies falling within the
metropolitan area. The cards will be distributed on the spot
following a waiting period of about half an hour.
