9 held after group clash
By Our Staff Reporter
TIRUNELVELI, JUNE 6. The police today took into custody nine
persons in connection with violent incidents in Sivagiri town
last night involving two rival groups.
According to police, four youths belonging to a particular group
damaged the cycle of a woman student of a rival group in front of
a local school yesterday. When Murugan, who accompanied the girl,
questioned the youths, he was assaulted. Then, supporters of
Murugan gathered to attack the youths.
The leaders of both the groups held a meeting, when it was
decided that all youths should tender their apologies. While two
youths, who were present at the meeting, did so on the spot, the
rest did not turn up.
The student's supporters insisted that the other youths too
should be summoned to the meeting immediately. However, when the
rival group said this could be done at a later stage, they
attacked a few shops in the Sivagiri bazaar. Police reached the
spot and restored peace. Five supporters of the girl and four
members of the rival group were arrested.
