60.36 p.c. polling in panchayat elections

By Our Special Correspondent

BANGALORE, JUNE 6. The second and final phase of elections to the taluk and zilla panchayats in 11 districts held today was by and large peaceful.

According to the police, barring a minor incident when workers of the Congress(I) and the Janata Dal(U) indulged in stone throwing in which nine persons were injured in Challakere taluk of Chitradurga district, there were no reports of violence.

According to the State Election Commission, the average per cent of polling in the second phase of elections was 60.36 as against 64.81 in the first phase.

The district-wise percentage of polling in the second phase was: Tumkur (62); Mandya (68); Mysore (60); Bijapur (56.46); Haveri (58); Bagalkot (59.33); Davangere (63); Bellary (60); Chitradurga (62); Gulbarga (55) and Koppal (60).

Heavy rains dampened enthusiasm of voters in Mysore where most of the booths wore a deserted look in the forenoon. However, polling picked up towards the afternoon when the skies cleared.

The counting of votes will begin at 8 a.m. on June 8.
