By Our Special Correspondent

SHILLONG, JUNE 6. The fourth conference of the North-East Region Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (NERCPA) began here today with ``socio- economic development of the north-eastern region vis-a-vis emotional integration'' as its theme.

The Lok Sabha Speaker, Mr. G. M. C. Balayogi, who inaugurated the two-day conference, said the forum of NERCPA provided an opportunity to the legislators of the north-east to discuss the issues and problems facing the region.

The Meghalaya Chief Minister, Mr. E. K. Mawlong, who was the guest of honour, dealt at length with the economic problems of the region.

He said that inadequte development of the agricultural and industrial sector of the region had led to an over-dependence on the service sector and its disproportionate expansion.
