CBI sends sleuths to monitor bookies' movements
NEW DELHI, JUNE 6. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is
zeroing in on 100-odd top bookies of the country who are
suspected to be closely associated with cricketers alleged to be
involved in match-fixing and betting scandal plaguing the game.
The CBI identified the bookies during its first month of
investigation. It has prepared a list of such bookies and
positioned its sleuths at various places to monitor their
movements.
At the same time, a report from Indore said that the Madhya
Pradesh police has registered a case of cheating and fraud
against former cricketer Manoj Prabhakar and two others for
allegedly swindling public money through the Uttar Pradesh-based
Apace India Group of Companies in his capacity as a director. The
U.P. police had registered a similar case against Prabhakar a
week ago.
Prabhakar claimed he was in no way connected with any of the six
companies of the Group.
Kapil to sue Bindra, Prabhakar
Former cricket all-rounder Kapil Dev will be filing Rs. 10 crore
defamation suit against the former BCCI president, Mr. I. S.
Bindra, and cable network CNN for allegedly causing damage to his
reputation by levelling match-fixing allegations and the amount
of damages to be claimed against former cricketer Manoj Prabhakar
and the portal, Tehelka.com, is being assessed, his counsel, Mr.
V. N. Koura, today said.
Kapil Dev had given Mr. Bindra, CNN, Prabhakar and Tehelka a
week's time to tender public apology or face legal proceedings.
