Defections jolt Speight

SUVA, JUNE 6. The rebel leader, Mr. George Speight, suffered three defections from his camp today - including a reserve Lieutenant Colonel.

Mr. Speight accused the military of spreading lies to damage his support.

The three defectors, including Lt. Col. Ratu Vilaime Volavola and two army engineers, had returned to their barracks much before the deadline set by the Fiji's new military ruler, Commodore Frank Bainimarama. The martial law chief ruled out any military solution to the hostage crisis.
