dated June 3, 1950: Stand united and be disciplined

An appeal to follow Gandhiji's teachings in letter and spirit was made by Pandit Nehru in his address to over 1,000 Congress workers in Trivandrum, on June 1.

The Prime Minister said: ``... India is independent country to- day. So far we have succeeded. How far we have succeeded in other matters is difficult to say. What are our achievements in the economic plane? The Congress adopted certain economic policy and ever since the attainment of independence, we have been trying to take to that policy. Unfortunately, ever since we have been free, we have had to face several problems. There were problems created by the war, which upset the whole economy of the world. During the war, there seemed to be a lot of money going about though it was paper money and a false idea of wealth got into people's mind. Gradually, in later years, it was seen that it was not real wealth. War creates no wealth.

``The people in England and Germany were greatly affected. Such people now work night and day to set aright their economy. We have not been actually affected by war... We have never been lacking in intelligence. We are intelligent, and brave people too. But we have lacked two things; unity and discipline; and because we lacked those two things, all our other virtues were washed away and we could not meet any disciplined opponent. So Gandhiji taught us not to set up barriers between various groups but to think nationally and struggle for freedom. If we keep down a large section of our people socially, then we have no moral right to claim freedom for ourselves.''
