MUL maintains lead in car sales
By Our Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI, JUNE 2. Maruti Udyog today said that its sales figures
for May showed that it once again led the `B segment' of mid-size
cars, pipping the closest competitors Hyundai and Daewoo to
distant second and third slots.
The company also led in the `C segment' comprising larger cars
and continued with its unchallenged suzerainty in the smaller
class of A segment cars.
The company said it maintained its lead in all segments despite
production constraints on account of shifting to Euro compliant
technology for all its models and higher prices in some States
due to implementation of the uniform sales tax arrangement.
In the highly competitive `B segment', Maruti notched a sales of
8,737 units in May. The Zen continued to top the segment with
6,516 units sold and another 2,221 units of its latest offering,
Wagon-R, further consolidated its position in this segment.
In the C segment, MUL sold 1,334 units (984 units of Esteem and
86 units of Baleno) and in the A segment where Maruti has total
sway, 11,137 units of Maruti 800 were sold and 4,557 units of the
Omni.
However, the competitors, specially in the B segment, are going
to run Maruti close during this month if not surpass it. But this
will not be due to any special marketing effort on the part of
Hyundai and Daewoo. Maruti will record lower sales because its
production facilities will be shut down for 10 days for its
periodic maintenance.
