PONDICHERRY, JUNE 2. A total of 17,588 voters will exercise their franchise in Yanam region where a by-election would be held on June 30 to fill the vacancy caused due to the resignation of Independent member, Mr. Malladi Krishna Rao, recently.

The Chief Electoral Officer, Mr. S. Hemachandran, said here today notification relating to the poll would be issued on June 5 and last date to file nomination is June 12, scrutiny of nomination is scheduled for June 13. Last date for withdrawal of nomination is June 16 and date of poll is June 30.

The Regional Executive Officer in Yanam, Mr. A.S.P.S. Ravi Prakash, would be the Returning officer at the polls and the Commissioner of Yanam Municipality and the Delegate of Education Department the Assistant Returning Officers.

All the 18 polling booths in Yanam would be equipped with electronic voting machines as per the instructions of the Election Commission. All the voters in the constituency should carry with them the votes identity card. If for some reason any voter has not been issued identity card, he or she would have to produce documentary evidence establishing the identity to the polling staff, Mr. Hemachandran said. This measure is taken to prevent impersonation of voters. Nearly 3,740 voters out of the 17,588 (8,787 men and 8,801 women) are yet to be issued identity cards.

The model code of conduct relating to the poll comes into effect from Friday in the district in which the Yanam assembly constituency is located. For this purpose the entire Union Territory is taken as a single district unit. The Chief Electoral Officer today told newsmen that no schemes or ad hoc appointments can be made with effect from June 02.

Mr. Rao had vacated the seat on May 30 supposedly to enable Chief Minister, Mr. P. Shanmugham, now a non-member in the Assembly to seek election within the time prescribed in the statute.
