H.C. reserves orders in Harpreet case

CHANDIGARH, JUNE 2. The Punjab and Haryana High Court today reserved its order on a petition seeking a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into the death of Harpreet Kaur, daughter of the SGPC president, Bibi Jagir Kaur.

Mr. Justice Amarvir Singh Gill reserved his order after marathon arguments in the case advanced by petitioner Kamaljit, who claimed to be the husband of Harpreet Kaur, alleging lopsidedness on the part of the Kapurthala district police for not conducting a post-mortem on the body of the deceased and not registering a case.

However, the Punjab Advocate General, Mr. H.S. Mattewal argued that the petition was ``nebulous, unnatural, misconceived and politically motivated to malign the reputation of Bibi Jagir Kaur by his political opponents like Mr. Sukhjinder Singh and his cohorts.'' He said the case was being investigated fairly and the statements of 118 witnesses in the case were recorded by the investigating team, besides examining Bibi Jagir Kaur and her daughter. Doctors and mid-wives in Phagwara were examined to find out whether ``the male child of Harpreet Kaur was forcibly aborted or not.''
