Wrong assessment caused Soron defeat: Gupta

NEW DELHI, MAY 30. The Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, Mr. Ram Prakash Gupta, today blamed ``casteism and wrong assessment of the situation'' for the defeat of the party nominee in the Soron Assembly byelections and said it would have no adverse impact on the BJP's prospect in the Panchayat polls.

``Our assessment went wrong with regard to the Soron byelection and we lost the seat," he told reporters after meeting Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission, Mr. K. C. Pant.

Asked why the party decided to nominate a candidate belonging to the same community fielded by the party led by former the Chief Minister, Mr. Kalyan Singh, he said ``that was the wrong assessment'', adding ``the exact causes for the defeat would be analysed''.

The Rashtriya Kranti Dal party, floated by Mr. Kalyan Singh barely six months ago, won the Soron seat defeating BSP. The BJP, which lost the seat, came fourth in this polls.
