Gulab Chand and Ajit Bhaduria win gold at Almaty

NEW DELHI, MAY 30. Gulab Chand and Ajit Bhaduria won gold medals at the Kosanov memorial international athletic meet, held at Almaty, Kazakhstan, on May 27 and 28.

Anand Menezes contributed a silver in the 200 metres and Nirbhay Singh took the bronze in hammer throw to complete a satisfying outing for the four-member Indian team which returned here on Monday.

Gulab Chand won the 5000 metres, in 14 min 30.98s, pushing behind Iranian Jafar Babakhani to whom he had lost in an international meet here last year. Babakhani clocked 14:31.29, with Kazakhstan's Takhir Namashaev claiming the bronze in 14:39.12.

Bhaduria took the discus gold with an effort of 55.86 metres, ahead of Kazak Evgeny Buchatskiy (53.51m) and Uzbek Roman Poltoratskiy (52.91m).

Menezes' silver in the 200 metres came in 21.73s, the winner, Konstantin Zhuravlev of Uzbekistan clocking 21.66s. Arif Akhundov of Azerbaijan was third with 21.99s.

Nirbhay Singh threw the hammer to 66.82 metres to come third behind Nikolay Davidov of Kyrgyzstan (69.15m) and Viktor Ustinov of Uzbekistan (67.20m).
