New Deputy Speaker elected

PONDICHERRY, MAY 30. Mr. K. Rajasekaran, TMC member representing the Mannadipet constituency, was elected unanimously today the Deputy Speaker of the Territorial Assembly.

The Speaker, Mr. A. V. Subramanian, announced the election of Mr. Rajasekaranin. Members belonging to the ruling and opposition blocks and the Chief Minister, Mr. P. Shanmugham, and the PWD Minister, Mr. P. Kannan, congratulated Mr. Rajasekaran on his election.

The Chief Minister and the Leader of the Opposition, Mr. R. V. Janakiraman, conducted Mr. Rajasekaran to his seat.

Mr. Rajasekaran is 64 year old and is an agriculturist. He is a registered member of the Pondicherry Cooperative Sugar Mills at Lingareddipalayam near here and had been championing the cuase of cane growers particularly in respect of their demand for rise in sugarcane price.

He had served as Parliamentary Secretary which post he quit in March when there was a political development marked by replacement of the DMK government by a Congress(I)-TMC coalition ministry headed by Mr. Shanmugham.

Mr. Rakasekaran, acknowledged the wishes and greetings from members, said he was pained to see that for some days the Assembly was not presenting an encouraging picture. ``Our accountability to the people should be kept in mind'' he said adding members should discharge their duties in keeping with democratic principles. He also sought members' cooperation in discharging his duties in the House.
